Job Description

Definition

Under general supervision from the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor (Events), performs the day-to-day activities of grounds maintenance workers involved in the maintenance and upkeep of the public use areas, grounds, and parks of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Monitors and ensures all areas and playground equipment are properly maintained and in good repair. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt and is considered a DRIVING position subject to working on call and weekend hours.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)

Examples of Tasks

1. Ensures the timely maintenance and upkeep of Community grass, shrubs, trees, flowers, cutting of grass and weeds, etc. Operates and maintains landscape irrigation systems and controls, and oversees and ensures the daily watering of grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Removes and discards plants as needed, and apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to keep landscaping healthy and attractive.

2. Performs regular inspections on park ramadas, picnic tables, grills, and playground equipment. Cleans, repairs, and replaces worn or damaged items as required.

3. Ensures assigned grounds and exterior trash cans within designated work areas are emptied on regular basis. Cleans and removes weeds and debris from all hardscape areas including sidewalks, gathering areas, parking lots, etc. Inspect, clean and stock park restrooms as needed.

4. Installs sprinkler systems and drip lines for grass, trees, plants, etc., in Community parks and cemeteries. Repairs and replaces broken sprinkler heads as needed. Inspects sprinkler systems on a regular basis to ensure that ample water is supplied to grass and plants.

5. Assist with food bank pick up food and move office/equipment moves. Delivers and sets up tents, tables, chairs, and other equipment for a various indoor/outdoor events in the Community. Maintains and repairs equipment after each use to make ready for the next event. Reports damages or equipment rendered unusable to the supervisor.

6. Performs other job related duties and special assignments as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of rules, procedures, methods and practices of grounds maintenance in this program.
  • Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of groundskeeping equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper care, nurture and maintenance of plants, shrubs, grass and trees.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance, including the hazards and safety precautions associated with their use.

  • Skill in operation and maintenance of groundskeeping equipment and machinery.
  • Skill in upkeep of grounds, fields and planted areas.
  • Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds keeping work, including backhoes, sprayers, and mowers.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to pick up and carry objects weighing at least 50 pounds.
  • Ability to and bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment such as push and riding mowers, string trimmers, edgers and shears.
  • Ability to safely use fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides using appropriate safety precautions and protective equipment.
  • Ability to work in various types of weather conditions with exposure to elements.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public.


Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED, and minimum of 2-3 years' experience in the maintenance of grounds and outdoor areas. Certification in the use of pesticides and herbicides is preferred.

Equivalency - Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would enable the candidate to satisfactorily perform and meet the duties and responsibilities required may be considered in meeting the stated minimum qualifications.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
