DESCRIPTION

A unit within the portfolio of the Vice Chancellor-Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, the Cross-Cultural Center is a holistic learning environment where training, programs, workshops, art exhibits, and open dialogue take place. The Cross-Cultural Center is a central hub for empowering and building community among students, faculty, and staff. The center also provides the opportunity for historically underrepresented and underserved UC San Diego students and staff to learn about themselves, learn about others, develop as leaders, and impact communities for social change in a supportive environment.

The Cross-Cultural Center is a product of cross-cultural coalition and commitment to work in solidarity for racial and social justice through the exploration of intersectional identities, educational programs on structural inequities, and active commitment to engage in community with our values of inclusion at the forefront. The Cross-Cultural Center was born from student & community movements and the continued success of the center is directly grounded in the hard work and dedication of the students, staff, faculty, and administrators who support this vision and commitment of equity, inclusion, and diversity on our campus. Since its formation in the mid-1990s, it has been a space of education, coalition building, and strategic action to move the campus towards a more diverse and inclusive community.

This position coordinates the CCC gallery space which includes: art procurement, insurance, campus policies, community outreach, art installation, and event planning. The Program and Communications Coordinator is responsible for coordinating several programs which include, but are not limited to, the annual Block Party Resource Fair, First Friday, Triton Days, and the Affiliated Student Organization Program. The incumbent provides supervision for student staff involving program development and strategy, event setup, breakdowns and special project supervision, art gallery development, student training, and affiliate organization development and support. Designs and implements all media outreach including website development and management, weekly electronic newsletter, social media footprint, and producing all marketing materials.

Under the supervision and direction of the Director and Assistant Director/Center Manager, the incumbent serves as programs and communications Coordinator for a large-scale, multipurpose, 6600 square foot, campus community space with an average of 12 - 15 activities daily including but not limited to: conferences, classes, meetings, symposia and special events. Incumbent develops, analyzes, interprets, and implements policies and procedures for the programmatic and communication operations of the CCC, including, facility usage access for affiliate organizations, implementation of and adherence to branding and communication protocols & procedures, Center program and student engagement databases, listservs, and requests for information and referral. Acts as the secondary fiscal transaction preparer (MyEvents, MyPayments, MyTravel, Express Card purchases, etc.) for the CCC. Incumbent serves as liaison with Facilities Management, IT, Marketplace, ACT, CMS, EVC business office and VC EDI Office as it pertains to affiliate organizations, student programs, website/marketing and art exhibits to ensure the communications and programmatic needs of the CCC are met. Compile and analyze data to prepare reports connected to the communications and programs of the Cross-Cultural Center and prepare portions of the Center's annual report document. Interact with UC San Diego students, staff, faculty, and community members on behalf of the Cross-Cultural Center and the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion including an understanding of the historical and social context of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the intersections of identities including, but not limited to: gender, race, ethnicity, ability, gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, religion, nationality, sex, culture, age, spirituality, physical appearance, and class background, and thorough understanding of the Cross-Cultural Center mission and values.

  • Proven experience with successful event planning and organization of special events, including familiarity with general accepted practices of the industry. Proven skills to handle the logistics of a wide variety of special events including meetings, student engagement socials, lectures, seminars, workshops and retreats. Demonstrated experience planning, coordinating, organizing, and executing large-scale events with close attention to detail. Demonstrated experience managing logistical details of assigned events from inception to completion.

  • Demonstrated experience providing work direction to student assistants. Setting priorities, managing workloads, ensuring and assisting in completion of assignments as needed. Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory and personnel management skills and strategies to provide oversight to student employees and interns, including experience with recruitment, training, supervision, providing day-to-day oversight, and evaluating the performance of diverse student personnel.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing professional social media presence and utilizing social media in a business setting, predominately catering to the college student population.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with emphasis on working with students, staff and faculty from diverse racial, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Proven ability to compose, draft and edit correspondence, reports, notices and announcements.

  • Ability to properly assess student crises and provide appropriate referrals and support, such as mental health, food or housing insecurity, academic concerns, etc. Properly assess and provide appropriate referrals and support around conflicts and crises between multiple students and/or conflicts among student organizations.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a customer service capacity, both on the telephone, in person, and using electronic communication systems, exercising tact and diplomacy with emphasis on flexibility and professionalism.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead workshops and other training programs on student leadership development, equity, diversity inclusion, staff training and student recruitment.

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot logistical and coordination complications and difficulties arising from technical problems or unexpected alterations in scheduled activities. Ability to be flexible. Ability to judge the effectiveness of processes and offer tactful, useful feedback areas of structure, logistics, processes and content with staff and user groups.

  • Excellent organizational skills and experience handling several projects simultaneously on short deadlines, must be able to prioritize tasks to meet established deadlines while working in an environment with frequent interruptions including coordinating efforts of multiple contributors in a fast-paced customer service oriented environment ; ability to exercise good judgment for problem solving and ability to anticipate problems.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $40,700 - $81,850 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.49 - $39.20

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
